The geriatricians at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Langone Geriatric Medicine Associates, located within the º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Langone Ambulatory Care Center 222 East 41st Street, provide consultations and a support service for adults age 70 and older who have complex care needs.

We provide comprehensive assessments, referrals, and information for caregivers about the following acute and chronic conditions:

  • memory loss
  • Alzheimer’s disease, including early-onset Alzheimer’s
  • cognitive impairment
  • dementia, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD)
  • frailty
  • mobility issues
  • multimorbidity (multiple chronic conditions)
  • polypharmacy (the regular use of multiple prescriptions)

During consultations, a geriatrician meets with patients to assess their condition and current treatment. We encourage patients to come to appointments with a family member or caregiver to help develop a treatment plan. These are some of the steps that occur during a typical assessment:

  • a review of the patient’s existing medical history, including brain scans over time, a review of the medications prescribed, and an assessment of all issues related to aging, such as frailty, falls, and overall wellbeing
  • a neurological examination to assess mood and cognitive function, such as memory, language, attention, visuospatial function, and judgment
  • blood tests, brain MRA, and other diagnostic testing as needed, such as single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) or PET scanning
  • a personalized treatment plan, which may include medications to slow memory loss and nonpharmacological approaches, such as psychotherapy and cognitive therapy; a holistic approach is taken to integrate mind and body functions
  • counseling based on a review of previous treatment plans
  • referrals for primary care providers (PCPs) or specialists for other necessary treatment
  • referrals to community resources when appropriate, such as adult day care, home care, respite care, or long-term care.

By looking at aging patients’ overall health and prognosis, the experts at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Langone Geriatric Medicine Associates provide a comprehensive assessment and make it easier to obtain any specialized services that may be needed.
