About Me
My role model when I was younger was my father, who was a neuropsychiatrist. I enjoyed speaking with him about the way he cared for patients who had challenging conditions and his empathic approach. I could not see myself pursuing any career other than medicine.
During medical school, I became fascinated by neurology. The decision to specialize in this field was an easy one, especially when I realized proper diagnosis and care can have a tremendous impact on the lives of people who have neurological conditions.
I became interested in clinical neurophysiology, which is a diagnostic branch of neurology that measures the electrical activity of the nerves, muscles, and brain. The subspecialty enables diagnostic assessment of the nervous system and provides a better understanding of neurologic symptoms. I perform several high-quality electrodiagnostic tests, including nerve conduction studies, electromyography, single-fiber electromyography, and evoked potentials. They help me diagnose a wide range of inherited or acquired neuromuscular conditions.
Some of the many conditions I manage include autoimmune disorders that affect the nerves, muscles, neuromuscular junctions, or protective sheath around nerves. These include Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, myasthenia gravis, and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome.
I provide care for people who have degenerative nerve or muscle conditions, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and myotonic disorders. I also see patients who have inflammatory disorders of the muscles, including polymyositis, inclusion body myositis, and dermatomyositis.
In addition, I manage various neuropathies that damage the peripheral nerves or spinal nerves. I care for people who have radiculopathy, which is the pinching of a nerve in the spinal column, and herniated spinal discs.
Over the last decade, the way we diagnose and treat neuromuscular conditions has rapidly advanced. I provide the most up-to-date therapies and offer a team-based approach to care. At º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Langone, I am fortunate to work with a group of compassionate neuromuscular neurologists and physicians whose specialties include spine surgery, neurosurgery, internal medicine, rheumatology, and otolaryngology.
I educate patients about their condition and ensure they receive care in a timely manner. I offer personalized medicine and treatment that allow children and adults who have neuromuscular disorders to lead full lives.
For more than two decades, I have been involved in training fellows in neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine. Many of these fellows are now employed in leadership roles at their institutions.
